Dragons rebuild continues as club set to meet exiled Dog; Storms’ No.1 headache: Transfer Whispers (2024)

The Dragons will reportedly sit down with Josh Addo-Carr and his management, with the exiled Bulldogs star almost certainly set to leave the Belmore club.

That is according to the SMH, who are reporting Addo-Carr’s negotiations with rival clubs will ramp up in the coming weeks, with his partner being close to giving birth.

Addo-Carr had a turbulent end to his 2024 campaign after testing positive for cocaine in a random road side drug test in September.

He stood himself down ahead of the club’s finals clash, with the gun winger maintaining he never willingly took the drug, claiming his innocence.

Addo-Carr’s time at the Bulldogs looks to be over, and the club’s powerbrokers have reportedly given him permission to sit down with rival clubs.

It’s previously been reported Canterbury are hoping a rival will recruit Addo-Carr, meaning his salary is wiped from their cap instead of being taken up if he’s terminated.

Shane Flanagan has already recruited veterans Damien Cook and Valentine Holmes, and now yet another established NRL star could be on the move to the Red V.

Addo-Carr is reportedly earning around $550,000 on his current deal which expires at the end of 2025.

Marcelo Montoya’s impending arrival at the Bulldogs could all but spell the end of Addo-Carr’s time at the Bulldogs.

PAPS SET FOR EXTENDED STORM STAY

Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen’s time at the club is looking likely to extend well beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of 2025.

With the 2020 Clive Churchill nearing free agency, Storm owner Matt Tripp has confirmed the club have offered him a three-year extension, which will likely keep him in the Victorian capital until 2028.

That is according to a report from The Daily Telegraph, which noted the deal is set to be worth approximately $1 million per season.

Tripp didn’t rule out the 26-year-old testing the open market, stating: “It is his right.”

“But I think he will acknowledge and realise that our offer, while it mightn’t be able to match the other offers in terms of dollars, that consistency and continuity piece is going to be important to him,” he said.

While Papenhuyzen’s extension is largely good news for the Storm, it leaves the club in a difficult position regarding negotiations with Sua Fa’alogo.

Fa’alogo is signed until 2028, but according to Nine’s Michael Chammas, his term at the club may come to a premature end given his preference to play fullback too.

“Matt Tripp, the Storm chairman, has a verbal undertaking with Sua Fa’alogo’s manager Liam Ayoub that if Ryan Papenhuyzen wants to extend his time, they will sit back down and look at his contract,” Chammas told Triple M recently.

“Now, that is not a clause in his contract; it’s not in writing, so it will come down to whether Melbourne keep their word, but there are clubs circling Sua Fa’alogo.”

An electrifying fullback, there would be no shortage of clubs interested in acquiring the 21-year-old’s services.

BACKROW JOY AND ANGST FOR THE KNIGHTS

Knights gun Kai Pearce-Paul will reportedly hit the open market, preparing to field offers from rivals in yet another contract blow to the Newcastle club.

The Englishmen’s reported decision comes only days after it was revealed Kiwi enforcer Leo Thompson would also hit the open market to test free agency.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting Pearce-Paul could field offers of around $600,000 per-season, with his current contract expiring at the end of the 2025 season.

His teammate Dylan Lucas, meanwhile, is set to sign a two-year extension to remain at the Knights, being rewarded for a breakout season.

Newcastle’s 2024 campaign marked Pearce-Paul’s first year in the NRL, having made the move from the Super League before he featured 22 times in first grade.

Pearce-Paul reportedly hasn’t ruled out remaining at the Newcastle club, but he is set to sit down with rivals to discuss a potential move come November 1.

The Knights are reportedly desperate to retain the hulking forward, alongside Thompson who has emerged as the club’s front row leader.

At only 19-years of age, the gun back rower made his Super League debut and went on to debut for England in the 2021 World Cup.

Jayden Brailey, Jackson Hastings and Adam Elliott have all reportedly been informed they are free to sit down with rivals.

Daniel Saifiti, meanwhile, signed with the Dolphins after he was reportedly also tapped on the shoulder regarding his future at the Knights.

For Thompson, his current deal expires at the end of 2025 and is worth a reported $350,000 which is well below his market value.

Knights recruitment boss Peter O’Sullivan only joined the club mid-season and has made re-signing Thompson one of his priorities to build a title contender in the coming seasons.

O’Sullivan has reportedly offered Thompson an upgrade for 2025 and an extension, but Thompson will wait to see what else is out there.
