A Hero's Recognition Behind Bars: Dr. Kizza Besigye's Fight for Democracy
Uganda's political landscape is often turbulent, and at the heart of the storm stands Dr. Kizza Besigye. Even while incarcerated in Luzira Maximum Security Prison, he has been awarded the prestigious Akufo-Addo Democracy Prize by the Democracy Union of Africa (DUA). This recognition, presented at the DUA Summit in Nairobi, shines a light on his unwavering commitment to democratic reform, a struggle that has spanned decades.
The award specifically honors Dr. Besigye's "decades-long commitment and persistence in the struggle for democracy, good governance, and rule of law in Uganda." DUA officials highlight his enduring courage in the face of repeated persecution. A DUA representative stated during the ceremony that "Our leader's fight is one marked by numerous arrests, detentions, and consistent acts of civil defiance, making him a symbol of the enduring fight for political freedoms in Uganda and Africa." The DUA further emphasized that "all alone in the confines of Luzira, yet Africa unites to honour his resilience and fight for democracy."
Besigye's supporters are celebrating this award as a continental validation of his lifelong fight for political freedom. A statement from members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) declared that "the award underscores the recognition of his sacrifice and his belief that standing up against injustice is never a crime."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Dr. Besigye's current imprisonment began in November 2024, following his arrest in Nairobi, Kenya, along with his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale. Human rights groups have condemned their alleged apprehension and forceful return to Uganda as an unlawful "extraordinary rendition." He was subsequently brought before the General Court Martial and charged with treason and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition – charges his legal team, led by Erias Lukwago, vehemently disputes.
Lukwago has filed numerous motions challenging the military court's jurisdiction over a civilian. "This case exposes once again the government's disregard for the rule of law and the constitutional limits of the military court," Lukwago stated in a previous filing. The Supreme Court ruled in January 2025 that the trial of civilians in military courts is unconstitutional. However, the state continues to pursue the case in the Army Court, a move that has drawn widespread criticism from legal experts and international human rights organizations.
And this is the part most people miss...
Reports indicate Dr. Besigye's health has deteriorated during his detention, including a hunger strike to protest prison conditions and the government's refusal to grant him bail. This is not the first time Besigye – who has challenged President Yoweri Museveni four times in elections – has faced politically motivated legal battles. He was previously arrested on treason charges in 2001 and 2005 and has endured multiple detentions related to his "Walk to Work" and civil defiance campaigns.
As Dr. Besigye approaches a full year in detention, the DUA's recognition serves as a personal victory and a powerful statement on the resilience of democracy advocates in Africa. This award not only honors his past struggles but also amplifies his ongoing fight for a more democratic Uganda.
